With but one record, an adult male collected 27 Aug 1889 in Malden #1889-1, this is among the rarest of the southern strays to show up in Massachusetts. There are a fair few other records in the northeast, including birds in Maryland and New Jersey, and even a Wisconsin record! Birders should note that the Masked Duck does not favor open water as do Ruddy Ducks, and often stays hidden in weeds in shallow water.
